42nd Annual Westborough Ski Swap
December 12 & 13, 2008 |

The 2008 Ski Swap was a great success.
Participation in the event was at an all time high. The
event provides a cost-effective alternative for families to buy
and sell skis. It also is an important fund raiser for our
organization. Many thanks to all who participated!

Holiday Lighting

Post 85 assisted the town for its annual
Holiday Lighting ceremony. The Post provided lighting,
shelter for Santa and other general assistance. |

Mutual Aid to Hopkinton
November 3, 2008 |

Hopkinton Fire Department activated
the Post for mutual aid assistance at their fire at 52 Haden
Road. The Post was requested for our air capacity and
filled a dozen airpacks at the scene. This was Hopkinton's
second fire that night. The Post responded to
Hopkinton at 4 am, provided service and its members made it back
for the start of school at 8. |

Westborough Police Union First Annual 10K
Road Race

The Post assisted the Westborough
Police Union during their First Annual 10K Road Race. The
Post provided general assistance, which included manning water
stations and event clean-up.

Worcester Fire Training October 16, 2008 |

The Post participated with the Westborough
Fire Department in live fire drills at the Worcester Fire
Department Training Center at the Worcester FD headquarters on
Grove Street. WFD members utilized Worcester's burn building
to hone their skills. The Post assisted by refilling over
40 air
tanks, providing lighting and
a rehab area. The drill
provided a real-life scenario for refilling air-packs, giving
all our members the opportunity to practice. Thank you to
both WFDs for allowing us to participate!

SCBA Training September 23 & 30, 2008 |

Firefighters Peter
Bowman and Pat Purcell from the Westborough Fire Department
taught members of the Post about SCBA usage. The first
night of training was classroom training. Members learned
about each SCBA component, safety features and how to don and
doff the units. The second night of training was a
practical evolution where members donned the units with blacked
out masks. Members had to follow a hose through a maze of
obstacles. The members got a great appreciation for the
difficulties firefighters face in the extreme conditions they
work in.
Many thanks to Firefighters Bowman and
Purcell for putting this all together. It was a great
learning experience for the Post!

SCUBA Checkouts at Back Beach in Rockport,
MA

The second day of checkout
dives was held at Back Beach in Rockport, MA. We had a
beautiful day with excellent conditions. Members completed
their checkouts in the ocean. There was abundant sea life,
visibility was great and a good time was had by all. We
can't say enough about the great class from Central Mass SCUBA.
They did an excellent job, going over and above our
expectations. Thanks again to Chris, Holly, Sean and all
those at CMS.

SCUBA Checkouts at Whitin Reservoir

The Post had its first of 2
days of checkout dives for its SCUBA training. The dives
were at Whitin Reservoir in Douglas, MA. Master Divers
from Central Mass SCUBA tested members on their SCUBA skills.
Thanks again to our instructors, and in particular Chris, Holly
and Sean. A second day of checkout dives are planned for
Cape Ann. |

Can Drive August 9, 2008 |

The Post held its annual can
drive. We collected and sorted more than 25,000 cans.
Thank you to all who dropped cans off that day and throughout
the year. Remember, if you have returnable cans and
bottles, you do not have to wait until our can drive. They
may be dropped off any day of the year. Please see our
fundraising page for details. |

The Post is sponsoring a
SCUBA class for its members. Central SCUBA Supply of
Worcester, MA is instructing the class at the Westborough Swim
and Tennis club. Members will gain a certification for a
life-long recreational activity. |

Westborough Block Party
July 3, 2008 |

The Post assisted the July
4th committee by providing electricity & lights and assisted
with the setup and cleanup of the various booths and the
band-stand. The Post also sold lightsticks. |

Gibbons Middle School Presentation

The Post visited the Gibbons
Middle School to educate prospective members about the Post.
We provided tours of our equipment and gave a demonstration of
SCBA use. |

WFD Training

The Westborough
Fire Department conducted training which included use of the
Mass Firefighting Academy maze trailer. Post 85 assisted
by refilling airpacks. The Post filled approximately 25
packs, helping to keep the training event moving efficiently. |

Morse Street Drill

The Post conducted an
exercise at the Morse Street well. Post members practiced their
brush fire skills. The backpack pump was demonstrated.
Members also learned how to use indian pumps.

Memorial Day

The Post marched in
the Memorial Day Parade and provided water to parade
participants. After the parade, the Post assisted the
Westborough Fire Department with their open house. |

CO Incident at 57 East Main Street

The Post responded
to 57 East Main Street for a carbon monoxide incident. A
high level of carbon monoxide was detected in the building,
prompting an evacuation. The Post responded and provided
fans, lighting, airpack refills and refreshments. |

Storm Drain Marking

The Post assisted
the Westborough Community Land Trust and the Westborough DPW by
marking over 140 storm drains. The markers let residents
know that the storm drains flow to waterways in an effort to not
pollute.

Fishing Derby

The Post assisted
the Civic Club and Rotary Club for the 2008 Fishing
Derby. Members assisted with measuring and recording
catches. Members also patrolled the shore and helped with
setup and cleanup. Thanks go out to Butch Byrd for
allowing us to participate.

Pawtucket Red Sox

Each year, the
Pawtucket Red Sox provides free tickets to the area police and
fire departments for opening day. This year, the Post went
to the game. The Sox won, members were able to see Bartolo
Colon pitch a shut-out and a good time was had by all. |

Visit With Upton Post 36

Upton Post 36
visited Post 85's headquarters. Post 36 is newly formed
and looking for ideas for their program. We gave Post 36 a
tour of our facility and equipment. We had a great
exchange, discussing both how our program operates and the ideas
Post 36 has for their group. Post 36 is off to a great start.
We're looking forward to more interaction between the Posts in
the future.

Mutual Aid to Northborough

The Post was called
for assistance at a fire at 243 West Main Street in
Northborough. The Post was called out at 3:30 in the
morning to supply air at the 5 alarm fire at the Northborough
Shopping Center. Members refilled bottles and provided a
heated rehab area.

First Aid

Members received
their First Responder First Aid certifications. The class
included practical evolutions. Thanks to Advisor and Fire
Fighter-Paramedic Jerry Jette for putting together a great
program.

Old Flanders Road
House Fire

The Post responded
with the Westborough Fire Department to an early morning house
fire on Old Flanders Road. Complicating matters was the
driving snow from a significant storm. Post members filled
many air-packs and provided rehab services.

Ski Trip

The Post went
skiing at Wachusett Mountain. Members had a great time
skiing. The members were able to use a portion of the
proceeds from the 2007 Ski Swap to fund the trip. We all
had a great time. We also learned what they sell at the
waffle house. (inside joke :) )

Ice Water Rescue

The Post assisted the Westborough Fire Department
with their annual ice water rescue training. Post members
set up a rehab area and tended shore lines. Members got a
great first hand look at the techniques and equipment used to
rescue victims from icy waters.
